Injuries That May Happen From Sporting Activities
Research has indicated that artificial playing surfaces may increase the risk of getting a foot or ankle injury. This is despite the reasons artificial turf was introduced, which includes controlling environmental conditions on playing surfaces, and to lower the maintenance costs of natural grass. Additionally, 90% of North American professional football players have a higher risk of getting injured on an artificial surface. There are many professional athletes who understand foot structure, and the importance of strengthening the feet and ankles. Strong feet play a role in controlling balance in the body, and the ankle acts as a lever to provide flexibility. The sesamoid bones are a few of the smallest bones in the body. Sesamoiditis, which is an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the sesamoid bones, can be common among runners, dancers, and gymnasts. If you would like more information about foot injuries that are common among athletes, in addition to how they are treated, please consult with a podiatrist.

Foot Pain May Come From a Lack of Awareness
Foot pain is common among people worldwide and it can happen from neglect, improper care, and lack of awareness. A common foot condition known as a bunion can develop from wearing shoes that do not have adequate room in the toe area. Many people wear orthotics which may help to redistribute the weight of the foot and can possibly reduce pain too. Corns are caused by excess friction from wearing shoes and socks that are too tight. Relief may be found when a protective pad is worn over the corn and larger shoes are purchased. The arthritic condition called gout generally causes severe pain and discomfort and results due to excess uric acid in the joints of the big toe. Many people change their diet by eliminating red meat and shellfish which may help to prevent gout attacks. Patients who have been afflicted with plantar warts may be familiar with the pain that this ailment can cause. It is a hardened area of skin that is found on the bottom of the foot and grows inward. It is considered to be contagious and is caused by a fungus. If you are experiencing any type of foot pain, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you with the correct treatment methods.

Contagious Athlete’s Foot
Tinea is the name of the fungus that causes athlete’s foot. It is a condition that affects the feet and is considered to be contagious. The symptoms that accompany athlete’s foot include itchiness, dry skin, and in severe cases, small blisters. This virus lives and thrives in warm and moist environments, including public swimming pools, locker rooms, and shower room floors. It is suggested that appropriate shoes are worn while in these areas, and it is beneficial to refrain from sharing towels. Additionally, washing and drying the feet thoroughly, and wearing clean socks daily, may help to prevent athlete's foot. There are many treatments for athlete’s foot, and it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine what the best one is for you.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?
Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.
Prevention
The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:
- Thoroughly washing and drying feet
- Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
- Using shower shoes in public showers
- Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
- Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot
Symptoms
Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:
- Redness
- Burning
- Itching
- Scaly and peeling skin
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

Preventing Diabetic Wounds With Good Foot Care
Diabetes can impair a person’s ability to feel differences in temperature or pain in their feet. This is because high levels of blood sugar can cause nerve damage, or diabetic neuropathy. Any little cut, scrape, pressure point or disturbance in the skin that goes undetected has the potential of becoming a more serious wound. Wounds can be dangerous to a person with diabetes because their heightened levels of blood glucose can also restrict circulation in the feet and their body’s ability to heal itself. Daily foot care then becomes essential for the diabetic to stay healthy and to prevent wounds and infections from developing. Feet should be kept clean, but never washed with water hot enough to scald the skin. Moisturizing the skin will help keep skin healthy and prevent it from cracking. Toenails should be kept trimmed straight across, and not too short. Jagged or long nails may cut into skin on surrounding toes, and toenails that are rounded or too short may lead to ingrown toenails. Feet should be inspected at least once a day to make sure no trauma has occurred to the skin. If anything unusual is detected, it is suggested you consult a podiatrist right away. In fact, regular visits with your podiatrist will be an important part of maintaining foot health and preventing wounds and ulcers from developing.

Diabetic Foot Care
Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.
The Importance of Caring for Your Feet
- Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
- Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
- Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.
Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.
It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

What Are Heel Spurs and How Do They Form?
Heel spurs, also referred to as calcaneal spurs or osteophytes, are calcium deposits that develop on the heel bone over time. They typically form in response to chronic strain or tears to the plantar fascia tissue that connects the heel with the toes, or to damage to the heel bone membrane. Other factors that may contribute to heel spurs developing include obesity, wearing improper shoes, age, trauma, training on hard surfaces, or having plantar fasciitis (damage to the plantar fascia) or certain medical conditions. Heel spurs develop on the part of the heel that is closest to the arch, and they point towards the middle of the foot. Heel spurs can be up to a half inch long and are usually only detectable with an X-ray. Heel spurs are usually not painful. When they are, a podiatrist can treat them with rest, ice, orthotic devices and/or shoes, anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections, or even surgery if necessary (to remove the spurs).
Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact one of our podiatrists from CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors will do everything possible to treat your condition.
Heels Spurs
Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.
Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.
Pain
The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.
Treatments
There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.
