Suffering from this type of pain? You may have the foot condition known as Morton's neuroma. Morton's neuroma may develop as a result of ill-fitting footwear and existing foot deformities. We can help.

A plantar fibroma causes soft tissue swelling in the sole of the foot. Sometimes when a patient has this affliction, one or more nodules can form in the soft tissue of the feet. It can happen in one foot or both feet at the same time. This condition can cause painful swelling in the feet and walking can be difficult. Plantar fibromas can be confused with benign Morton neuromas, cysts or more serious and malignant sarcomas. If you have swelling or uncomfortable foot nodules, it is strongly suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist. This foot and ankle expert can provide a proper diagnosis using radiographic imaging and suggest appropriate treatment.

A plantar fibroma may disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Plantar Fibroma

A plantar fibroma is a fibrous knot in the arch of the foot. It is embedded in the plantar fascia which is a band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes along the bottom of the foot. There can be multiple plantar fibromas in the feet at the same time. There are no known causes for this condition. If you have a plantar fibroma, there will be a bump in the arch of your foot that cannot be missed. Any associated pain is most often due to a shoe rubbing against the nodule. Non-surgical options, such as steroid injections, physical therapy, and orthotics should be tried first. Surgery is a last resort and is the only thing that will remove a plantar fibroma entirely. Consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and to determine the treatment regimen that is right for you.

What Causes a Plantar Fibroma?

While there are no specific causes identified, a plantar fibroma can possibly come from genetic predisposition or the formation of scar tissue that forms from healing the tears in the plantar fascia.

What Are the Symptoms of a Plantar Fibroma?

There will be a noticeable lump in the arch of the foot that may or may not cause pain. If pain is felt, it is typically because a shoe is rubbing up against the lump or when walking or standing barefoot.

Treatment and Prevention

A plantar fibroma will not disappear without treatment, but it can get smaller and be a non-issue. If pain persists, a podiatrist examines the foot and when the arch of the foot is pressed, pain can be felt down to the toes. An MRI or biopsy might be performed to help diagnose or evaluate the plantar fibroma. The following non-surgical options are generally enough to reduce the size and pain of these nodules:

  • Steroid injections
  • Orthotics
  • Physical therapy to help apply anti-inflammatory creams on the bump

Surgery is considered if the mass increases in size and the patient continues to feel pain after non-surgical methods are tried.

Plantar Fasciitis and Soccer

Plantar fasciitis is an extremely common affliction of the foot. It affects the plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue that is found along the sole of the foot. Plantar fasciitis may develop when the plantar fascia becomes irritated and inflamed. This painful foot condition can be caused by many sports and strenuous physical activities, such as soccer. Since soccer requires an athlete to engage in frequent sideways and diagonal cuts while running, extra pressure is exerted on the feet. In particular, the medial heel and arch are subject to a significant amount of force in American soccer players. The risk of plantar fasciitis may be even more pronounced in substitute soccer players who, after initially warming up their bodies, wait on the sidelines for long periods of time. This may cause their muscles to tighten up before playing again and can make an individual more susceptible to plantar fasciitis. If you are a soccer player, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who will be able to provide you with the treatment for plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists  from CyFair Family Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Foot Blisters During the Summer

Many individuals who care about maintaining good foot health take extra care to avoid getting blisters on their feet. The reason is that foot blisters can cause discomfort and are unsightly. During the summer season, an individual could potentially be at an increased risk of developing foot blisters. At this time, an individual can sweat more than usual, specifically in the feet. When there is extra sweat around the feet, this can lead to more friction between the feet and the shoes. With the added friction comes an increased chance of developing friction-related blisters. Therefore, as the weather gets warmer into the summer months, a vigilant person can take steps to minimize sweating and blister formation on the feet. If you are someone looking to prevent blisters, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today for more information.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

What Can Cause Poor Circulation?

Having cold feet may be a symptom of poor circulation. Feet may also become numb and discolored, and there are various reasons for this condition to happen. Existing medical ailments, such as Raynaud’s disease may lead to developing poor circulation. Having acrocyanosis, which turns the feet or toes blue, may be another reason for this to occur. This condition can cause the blood vessels to constrict, and blood is prevented from moving through the feet. Patients who have diabetes often have poor circulation, and immediate medical attention is often sought that may help to prevent diabetic foot ulcers from developing. Additionally, smoking, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels may cause poor circulation. There are methods that can be implemented which may help to reduce the risk. Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
